Historical Note

The San Antonio Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was established in 1918 by Mr. J.A. Grumbles with 503 founding members. Amongst those present at the first meeting were Mr. J.A. Grumbles, Mrs. Carol Brooks, Mrs. Edna Billups Carter, Mr. J.D. Lowery, Sr.; Mr. Harold Tarver, Mr. Cal Burton, Mrs. F. Hooks, Rev. Lazarus Richards, and Dr. J.T. Walton. At the outset, the organization secured a property at the present day site of San Antonio’s Carver Community Cultural Center, and focused on increased employment for African American women. Over the next five decades the branch focused on a variety of issues, including the importance of the vote (1930s), discrimination and abuse (1940s), segregation in public schools (1950s), employment discrimination (1960s), and human rights (1970s). In the 1980s, the branch focused on equality and justice issues, established a Job Bank, and began production of a newsletter. The 1990s saw a renewed focus on employment discrimination, as well as census redistricting, involvement in ACT-SO (Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics), and the distribution and receipt of numerous scholarships and awards. The branch’s work in the 2000s focused on combating racial profiling, working on discrimination cases for community members, additional scholarship work, further involvement in ACT-SO, and supporting victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In 2016 the branch petitioned to host the national NAACP convention; the convention was subsequently held in San Antonio in 2018.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is comprised of 9 linear feet (21 boxes) of records which span the years 1976-2016. The bulk of the records date 1986-2008 and are chiefly the records of branch presidents Ethel Minor, Thomas Rockeymore, and Oliver Hill. The collection is organized into seven series.

The Constitution and Bylaws series (ca. 1980s-2016) contains basic governing documents for the San Antonio Branch, as well as historical information on the branch. The Correspondence series ranges from 1996 to 2010 and contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, largely from Presidents of the branch. The Meetings series (1984-2008) contains minutes from monthly Executive Committee and General Branch Meetings. Many reports submitted by committees at these meetings are included in this series. The Reports series (1987-2005) contains annual committee and branch reports created for submission to National NAACP Leadership, as well as financial reports. The series also contains convention delegate reports for the branch and monthly committee reports. The Newsletters series (1987-2006) contains quarterly newsletters of the San Antonio Branch. Representation is consistent from 1987-1997, but there are no newsletters from 1998-2003. There is one newsletter from April 2004 and two from 2006.

Subject Files/Committee Work (1976-2016) is the largest series in the collection and is arranged alphabetically by topic. Topics frequently correspond with functional branch committees, such as ACT-SO, Freedom Fund Dinner, and Membership Committees. The folder entitled “Freedom Fund Dinner Programs and Historical Research” contains additional historical information on the branch not found in the Constitution and Bylaws series, including a written history of the branch and a list of past branch presidents. The State and National series (ca. 1985-2016) contains material produced by the state (Texas) and national branches of the NAACP, including reports and manuals, questionnaires from the 2008 U.S. presidential election, and a five-year run of the state newsletter, ”The Mover” (1991-1996).
