Biographical Sketch

Fred R. Garza is a Chicano activist who lives in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and Juárez-Lincoln University in Austin, Texas, before graduating from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M Kingsville) in 1972. Garza ran for Texas Railroad Commissioner in 1972, 1974, and 1976 as a Raza Unida Party candidate, on a platform which advocated for environmental and consumer protection. Garza has been active with several organizations in San Antonio and Houston through the years, including the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO), the VISTA Minority Mobilization Project, the Texas Farm Workers Union, United Farm Workers, Teatro Bilingue, Teatro de los Barrios, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, Festival Chicano, the Hispanic International University of Houston, and Academia América.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of approximately 160 political and cultural posters from the Chicano movement ranging in dimensions from 8.5 x 11 inches up to 26 x 38 inches. The posters are predominately from La Raza Unida Party, Texas Farm Workers Union, United Farm Workers, and several theater groups in Houston and San Antonio, Texas.
