Biographical Sketch

David R. Johnson is Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He began teaching at UTSA in 1975 as an assistant professor, as associate professor from 1979-1985 and as full professor thereafter. He also served as a vice provost and iterim dean of libraries.

As an urban historian, Johnson has written extensively about crime and politics in urban America. His written work includes, Policing the Urban Underworld: The Impact of Crime on the Development of the Police in America, 1800-1887,Temple University Press, 1979 , American Law Enforcement: A History,Temple University Press, 1979, American Law Enforcement: A History, Forum Press, 1981, The Politics of San Antonio: Community, Progress, and Power, University of Nebraska Press, 1983Illegal Tender: Counterfeiting and the Secret Service in Nineteenth-Century America, Smithsonian Institution Press (Washington, DC), 1995
