![]() A Guide to the Jaime Martinez Scrapbook, 1946-1997 (bulk 1978-1987)
Biographical SketchJaime Martinez was a civil rights activist and labor organizer. Martinez was a native of San Antonio, growing up on the city's west side, raised by his grandparents who were migrant workers. In 1966, Martinez joined the International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE) where he advocated to secure jobs and living wages for workers. Inspired by the work of César E. Chávez in California, Martinez organized protests and marches in solidarity with local migrant farm workers. He organized workers in states other than Texas, traveling to the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, New Jersey, Arkansas, and Ohio. Martinez also made trips to Washington, D.C. to lobby on behalf of workers rights. Martinez created the César E. Chávez Legacy and Education Foundation and led the César E. Chávez March for Justice each year. In recent years, Martinez mentored young, undocumented immigrants determined to make the United States their permanent home. He believed that sanctuary cities should provide a path to citizenship for hard working immigrants. Local leaders and politicians praised Martinez's dedication to helping vulnerable individuals.
