Biographical Note

Born in Hondo, Texas on August 16, 1914, Lucy Justine Davis was the daughter of Fletcher and Roberta Hopp Davis. Davis graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University with degrees in Journalism and Home Economics. Initially wanting to become an editor for the Ladies Home Journal food pages, Davis instead took a fourth and fifth-grade teaching job in Runge, Texas and decided to become a teacher. She earned a Smith-Hughes teaching certificate from A&I at Kingsville which would allow her to teach home economics.

Davis taught for 43 years, instituted the first all-boys home economics class and aided in the establishment of similar classes in several schools in South Texas. Davis was considered a mother figure by her students and kept in contact with many of her students after they graduated. In 1917, she was honored by the Sinton Enterprise with a "Mother of the Year" award.

In 1978, Davis retired from teaching and moved back to her family home with her sister Anne. She was an active member of her community participating as a member of the Castro Colonies Heritage Association, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, St. John's Historical Association, and served as an editor of the Medina County History Volume I and other publications. Davis was involved in local historical research until her death on September 26, 2014, Davis was a recipient of the Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce Cornerstone Award along with her sister Anne for their contribution to the community.
