Alexander Caragonne was an architect who co-founded the San Antonio based firm Reyna/Caragonne Architects. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1960 and wrote The Texas Rangers: Notes From an Architectural Underground, which chronicled Caragonne's time at the UT Austin School of Architecture. Caragonne received his Masters in Architecture from Cornell University in 1968 under the guidance of the late Colin Rowe, with whom Caragonne later collaborated on the three-volume As I Was Saying series from MIT Press. Caragonne was also an educator and taught throughout his career at the Universities of Texas at Austin and San Antonio, Harvard, Yale, and Cornell.
Among Caragonne's prominent works in San Antonio were the Plaza Guadalupe, Brackenridge Park master plan, Gardendale and Loma Park elementary schools, Collins Garden Library, and an urban design concept for Broadway Street in San Antonio. Plaza Guadalupe was Caragonne's greatest public space design. His achievement was published in Architectural Record and in Architecture magazine and won a design award from the Texas Society of Architects in 1985. Plaze Guadalupe, located on the west side of San Antonio, was the site of Pope John Paul II's 1987 visit and Senator Barack Obama's visit in 2008.
