The Pan American League, established in 1947, is a benevolent organization of women who are dedicated to enhancing the general welfare and well-being of San Antonio residents in the areas of health care, education, and leadership development.
In 1947, a city health nurse, Miss Adela Chacon saw a need for a health clinic on the west side of San Antonio, in what is now the Edgewood School District, to meet the needs of the impoverished citizens. Miss Chacon called on Mrs Juan Rivero, Mrs Ramon Galindo, Mrs Fausto Gutierrez, and Mrs Jesse Benavidez--all doctors' wives--to gather their friends to organize the Pan American League. The PAL was established that year with the assistance of Sister Mary Victory, who was the director of the Guadalupe Community Center.
In 2003, the Pan American League Charitable Foundation gave the University of Texas at San Antonio $200,000 to establish a new scholarship fund for undergraduate education. The $1,000 scholarship will be renewable for up to three years after the initial award and recipients will be known as "Pan American League Scholars."
