Creator Abstract: |
Dr. Joseph Michel was the first Dean of Multidisciplinary Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was a Fulbright Scholar and lectured and contributed to programs in Chile, Denmark, England, Mexico, Peru, and Spain. He became UTSA's Dean of Multidisciplinary Studies in 1973, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. Before coming to UTSA, Michel served as the director of the Foreign Language Education Center at the University of Texas at Austin from 1962-1973. |

The collection includes class notes and articles, videos, college papers written by Michel, syllabi, bibliographies, notes on lectures, photographs, clippings, correspondence, awards and other certificates of accomplishment, a gavel, and the blueprints of Michel's house. |

Dr. Joseph Michel was the first Dean of Multidisciplinary Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was born in Autlan, Mexico, on March 19, 1922, and graduated from high school in Louisiana in 1939.
Michel received a B.A. degree from De La Salle University in Louisiana in 1944. In 1952, he received his M.A. degree from the Universidad Nacional de Mexico, and in 1961, he graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Ph.D. His graduate work focused on Spanish and Latin American literature.
Michel joined the University of Texas at Austin faculty in 1962 as director of the Foreign Language Education Center. He was a Fulbright Scholar and lectured and contributed to programs in Chile, Denmark, England, Mexico, Peru, and Spain. In 1973, Michel accepted a position as dean of the College of Multidisciplinary Studies and professor of Foreign Language Education at The University of Texas at San Antonio. He remained at UTSA until his retirement in 1986.
Dr. Michel died on November 1, 2003.

The collection is arranged into three series: Professional Files, Education, and Personal Files.
The Professional Files series consists of teaching materials including lecture notes, syllabi, bibliographies, notes, sample literature, and videocassette tapes that were used for teaching in his lectures. The series also includes newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, programs, and brochures that document a large part of his professional activities outside of teaching.
The Education series includes Michel's college records, including class schedules and grades.
The Personal Files series comprises correspondence, photographs, blueprints of Michel's house, and other materials.
