![]() A Guide to the Emma Martin Carter papers, 1896-1958
Biographical NoteEmma Elnora Martin was born in 1884 in Fort Worth, one of 13 children of J.T. and Annie Beard Martin. In 1905, she moved to San Antonio, marrying Claud Julian Carter (son of Edward Frank Carter and Alice B. Cleaves) in 1908. Carter was the founder of the Federation Church Women in San Antonio in 1920. She and her husband started the first supervised playground, which was later deeded to the city (Belle Digarde Playground). She was founding president of the Women's Democratic Club of Bexar County and National Democratic Delegate to the 1924 DNC in New York. Carter was also a member of the Alamo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Albert Sidney Johnston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Colonists and the Rebekah Lodge. She was also a member of Laurel Heights Methodist Church. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe collection the years 1896-1957 and consists of correspondence, scrapbook materials, newsclippings, and materials on the 1924 Democratic National Convention including scrapbooks, name tag/ribbon, program of entertainment booklet, biographical sketches of the Texas Delegates pamphlet, and a Dinner in Honour of the Delegates and Alternates program; other material on the Democratic party including a booklet, The Democrat Who Can Win, invitations. Also included are Iauguration materials, suchy as invitations, programs and a dance book. Much of the general correspondence is from representatives, including Morris Shepphard, regarding bills Carter wanted to pass concerning better treatment and education for prisoners.
