Jacinto Quirarte was a professor emeritus and former dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). As an art historian, he concentrated on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art history. In addition to numerous articles, Quirarte wrote The Art and Architecture of the Texas Missions, which was published by the University of Texas Press in 2002. He was also the author of Mexican American Artists, A History and Appreciation of Chicano Art, How to Look at a Masterpiece, and Izapan Style Art: A Study of Its Form and Meaning.
Born in 1931 in Jerome, Arizona, a small mining town, he lived in an area referred to as "El Barrio Méxicano" or "El Barrio Chicano." His father was an immigrant from Mexico and his mother was born in the United States. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from San Francisco State College (in 1954 and 1958, respectively) and his Ph.D. degree from the National University of Mexico in 1964. From 1954-1957, Quirarte served in the Air Force as a navigator for a bomber squadron. Prior to coming to UTSA, Quirarte taught at the Colegio Americano in Mexico City (1959-1962), the University of the Americas in Mexico City (1962-1964), Yale University (1967), and the University of Texas at Austin (1967-1972). Quirarte also served as the director of the Centro Venezolano in Caracas, Venezuela (1964-1966), where he worked with the U.S. State Department in a cultural exchange program.
Jacinto Quirarte became UTSA's dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts upon its inception in 1972. As dean, he was among the first academic officers charged with building the new University. He oversaw the College's move to its permanent location on the new UTSA campus at Loop 1604 in 1975. He resigned as dean in 1978 to be the full-time director of UTSA's Research Center for the Arts, a multidisciplinary program that explored Hispanic and Colonial influences in art and culture.
Quirarte lectured at conferences and museums in the United States and other countries. In 1975, he was one of 25 people appointed by President Ford to the American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Council. He was appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Affirmative Action in Employment at Institutions of Higher Education and was also a panelist-columnist for the National Endowment for the Humanities. From 1982-1987, Jacinto chaired the National Task Force on Hispanic Art of the National Endowment for the Arts. Additionally, he served on the boards of directors of the San Antonio Symphony, the San Antonio Arts Council, and the Harvard Journal on Chicano Affairs.
Quirarte retired from UTSA in 1999, but continued teaching as a professor emeritus of art history until 2008. He passed away in 2012.

The Jacinto Quirarte Papers span the years 1944 through 2009 and include correspondence, speeches, administrative records, articles, manuscripts for publication, newsletters, posters, and photographs. The bulk of the materials date from the 1970s to the 1990s. The collection documents Quirarte’s career at UTSA as founding dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (now the College of Liberal and Fine Arts) and a professor emeritus. As an art historian, Quirarte focused on Pre-Columbian and Chicano art; his research on these topics is well represented in the papers, in addition to research on the Spanish Missions in Texas, Mesoamerican art, and Mayan art.
The collection is organized into three series: 1. Professional and Research Files, 2. Research Center for the Arts (RCA), and 3. The Art and Architecture of the Texas Missions.
Records related to Quirarte’s teaching, administrative work, research, and professional service are included in Professional and Research Files. This series contains correspondence, articles and speeches he authored, research articles he gathered, syllabi and course notes, information about committees on which he served, and documents related to travel and conferences. His involvement with the 1976 American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Council is documented through his notes and memos, and even in correspondence with fellow member, Maya Angelou. Included among the research Quirarte gathered on contemporary artists is a collection of invitations and posters for modern art exhibitions held in New York from 1966-1972.
A small subseries, titled 1.1 Chicano Art Master Slides VI, consists of approximately 330 color slides created or collected by Quirarte in the course of his research and teaching. The slides are primarily of Chicano murals from cities thoroughout the American Southwest. The remainder of the slides are images of artworks by Chicano artists and examples of churches or other buildings designed in the Spanish Colonial architecture style.
The second series contains records from the Research Center for the Arts (RCA), a multidisciplinary unit established in 1977 within the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Jacinto Quirarte was the founding director of the Center, which aimed to provide leadership in the arts by encouraging professional research in the visual and performing arts, focusing on Pre-Columbian, Hispanic, and Colonial influences. In later years the Center was known as the Research Center for Arts and Humanities, and even later, the Research Center for the Visual Arts.
The first subseries in this section is dedicated to administrative files and newsletters from the RCA. The remaining six subseries are each related to a specific project, including the grant-funded creation of curriculum materials and published resources for students and teachers, and the development of research symposia and workshops.
The third series is comprised of materials collected and created in the course of writing his book, The Art and Architecture of the Texas Missions, which was published in 2002. These documents include typescripts, galley proofs, photographs, and other materials. This series is divided into three subseries: 3.1 Drafts and Related Materials includes correspondence with his publisher, notes, outlines, drafts, and other records of his writing process; 3.2 Bibliographic Texts for Research contains articles he gathered in the course of his research; 3.3 Photographic Negatives consists of images of the Texas Missions.

Subseries 1.1 Chicano Art Master Slides VI |
|
|
|
Approximately 330 color slides created or collected by Quirarte in the course of his research and teaching. The slides were given to the archives in a box labeled "Chicano Art Master Slides VI." The slides are primarily of Chicano murals from cities thoroughout the American Southwest. The remainder of the slides are images of artworks by Chicano artists and examples of churches or other buildings designed in the Spanish Colonial architecture style. Some slides have brief notes about the location or artist written on the slide mounts, others do not. Some slide mounts have date stamps indicating they were processed between 1980 and 1983. The slides have been arranged into sets following Quirarte's handwritten, alphanumeric identifiers, which begin with prefixes VIA through VIF. |

Series 2. Research Center for the Arts (RCA) |
|
This series contains records from the Research Center for the Arts (RCA), a multidisciplinary unit established in 1977 within the College of Fine and Applied Arts. |
