Creator Abstract: Naomi Shihab Nye has published several books of poetry, writings for children, and the young adult novel Habibi, and wrote as a columnist for Organica: A Magazine of Art and Activism. Nye has also worked as a visiting writer in schools at all grade levels. Her university teaching experience includes the University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas at San Antonio, and the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2001, Nye received a presidential appointment to the National Council of the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has won several awards, including four Pushcart Prizes and a Guggenheim Fellowship. She was a National Book Award Finalist in 2002.
Content Abstract: Collection includes the typescripts, manuscripts, drafts, proofs, and other pre-publication forms of the writings of poet and writer Naomi Shihab Nye. Writings include early and revised drafts of poems, essays, and other writings. Published work is supplemented by hundreds of unpublished poems. These working papers are accompanied by notebooks dating back to Nye's school years, an extensive correspondence file with authors, editors, publishers, family members and fans, copies of her publications in book form, and her contributions to books and journals. Also present is extensive material about Nye, including audiovisual materials, work relating to her teaching in public schools, and photographs.

Biographical Note

Naomi Shihab Nye, born in 1952 of a Palestinian father and American mother, grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, Jerusalem, and San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Trinity University (San Antonio, Tex.) in 1974 and is married to photographer Michael Nye. She has published several books of poetry, writings for children, and the young adult novel Habibi, and wrote as a columnist for Organica: A Magazine of Art and Activism. Nye has also worked as a visiting writer in schools at all grade levels. Her university teaching experience includes the University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas at San Antonio, and the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2001, Nye received a presidential appointment to the National Council of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The collection includes the typescripts, manuscripts, drafts, proofs, and other pre-publication forms of the writings of poet and writer Naomi Shihab Nye. Writings include early and revised drafts of poems, essays, and other writings. Published work is supplemented by hundreds of unpublished poems. These working papers are accompanied by notebooks dating back to Nye's high school years, an extensive correspondence file with authors, editors, publishers, family members and fans, copies of her publications in book form, and her contributions to books and journals. Also present is extensive material about Nye, including audiovisual materials, work relating to her teaching in public schools, and photographs.

The Personal Files Series includes biographical information pertaining to Nye and her family, write-ups of public events, Nye's personal correspondence (letters, emails, greeting cards, faxes, invitations, and other correspondence), Nye's appointment books and calendars, awards and honors (diplomas, certificates, plaques, and other awards and honors), and various ephemera, textiles, and other materials documenting the personal life of Naomi Shihab Nye.

The Written Work Series includes typescripts, manuscripts, manuscript notes, correspondence, journals, coursework, and other written work by Naomi Shihab Nye. Nye's writings include various book projects, including her editing work and work in anthologies, published and unpublished poetry and prose, and work for textbooks. Also includes material pertaining to administrative aspects of Nye's writing, such as financial and legal materials, contracts, royalty statements, and publicity and reviews.

The Other Projects Series documents Nye's work on projects outside the domain of writing or teaching.

The Teaching Series includes materials pertaining to workshops, visiting lectureships or other visiting appointments, and Nye's involvement with the Writers in the Schools / Poets-in-the-Schools teaching program. Materials include teaching materials, correspondence, student work, and other materials. Some materials are from the Artists in the Schools program.

The Public Appearances Series documents Nye's public appearances at libraries, bookstores, professional conferences, and other events. Includes event announcements, posters, and correspondence.

The Subject Files Series includes general vertical file materials, collected by Nye, about other writers, artists, and friends. Also includes files on specific topics including Arab-Americans/Middle East Conflict, San Antonio, and other subjects.

The Photographs Series includes photographs of Nye, Nye's family and friends, public events, and other subjects. Photographs have been identified or categorized by Nye.

The Works by Others Series includes creative works by other writers and artists. Works are chiefly unpublished. Includes some work of Nye's students and family. Document types include manuscripts, pamphlets, correspondence, sketches, and other materials.

The Audiovisual Materials Series includes CDs, DVDs, VHS, audio cassettes, and reel-to-reel formats. Content includes conferences, public appearances, works by others, written work, and teaching.

The Electronic Media Series is comprised of floppy disks.
