![]() A Guide to the Church Women United in Texas Western Hills Unit Records, 1990-2000
Historical NoteChurch Women United in Texas--Western Hills Unit, an ecumenical community of Christian women, was organized in 1990 in the Texas Hill Country, northwest of Austin, Texas. The unit's membership nucleus came from ten of 100 area churches with members in Church Women United in Texas—-Austin Unit. Membership in the unit was also extended to members of churches who participated in Hill Country Ministries. In 2000, after ten years of active participation in Church Women United (CWU), the Western Hills Unit disbanded. During its existence, the unit was affiliated with the national organization of CWU and the state levels of the organization and also worked with other area units. Church Women United is a "racially, culturally, theologically inclusive Christian women's movement, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice." Founded in 1941, today it has 1200 local and state units in the United States and Puerto Rico and "represents 25 million Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women." The organization's national headquarters are located in New York City. CWU brings Christian women together for spiritual nourishment and faith based advocacy. The organization works in a broad spectrum of community ministries, including social justice advocacy and action, prison ministries, food pantries, tutoring, and childcare and job skills training. On the national and international levels, CWU works in partner groups on common issues and emphases. Annual "ecumenical celebrations" and international or "global relations" events are held to fulfill the organization's goals. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteReports, minutes and proceedings, printed material, and other printed and scrapbook material of the Church Women United in Texas--Western Hills Unit document the unit's organization, structure, and activities of its ten year existence, 1990-2000. The unit's participation in CWU's state and national projects is described in these materials, but the bulk of the material covers local activities. Especially well documented are the years 1995-1998, when the unit was led by President Carol Kosti. Documentation of the unit's last two years, 1998-2000, is minimal. The documents are arranged into three series: Organization, Activities, andScrapbook. Materials in the Organization series document the unit's structure, bylaws, membership, and history, as well as unit meeting minutes, financial reports, newsletters, yearbooks, and newspaper articles and press releases. Materials on the unit's participation in the state and national organizations, including a video of the CWU State Assembly of 1998, are included but make up a small part of the collection. Materials in the Activities series document Church Women United celebrations: "World Day of Prayer,""World Community Day," and"May Fellowship Day"; the state and national"Interfaith Impact" project; and the local"Hill Country Medical Ministries." Also included is documentation on participation in local retreats and fundraisers and in the national project, "Fellowship of the Least Coin." Photographs of some events are included, most notably those taken when the unit was formed. The collection also includes a scrapbook which documents the life of the unit.
