The Woman's Club of San Antonio, a club organized for charitable work, education and fellowship, was founded on October 1, 1898. It is the oldest women's civic and social organization in San Antonio, and was the first women's club in Texas to endorse women's suffrage. Among the charter members of the Club were San Antonio suffragists Eleanor Brackenridge, Marin B. Fenwick and Anna Hertzberg. The civic interests of the Woman's Club include, but are not limited to, advocating vocational training for girls in public schools, supporting public health and safety measures, writing members of Congress regarding immigration policies, initiating flower shows to foster local beautification efforts, and establishing March 8 of each year as Friendship Day. The Woman's Club has served the community by offering scholarships and loans to women in college, helping to establish the Witte Museum, supporting the Bexar County Tuberculosis Association, providing volunteers to the State Hospital, and participating in a variety of fund raising events for local charities. One of the largest events in which the Woman's Club participates is Fiesta. The Woman's Club coordinates the Fiesta Flower Show, Fashion Show and Teenage Coronation, and is involved with the Fiesta River Parade and the Pilgrimage to the Alamo. The activities sponsored by the club are well documented in the 'club' pages of the San Antonio Express-News and the former San Antonio Light.
The club has owned two clubhouses, the first on Camden Street, and the current clubhouse on San Pedro, the Woodward House, which is both a state and national landmark. Through meetings, luncheons and community involvement, the Woman's Club provides members with opportunities for friendship, exchange of ideas, professional networking and philanthropy. As of January 1996, the Woman's Club continues to meet and engage in community activities in San Antonio.

The records of the Woman's Club of San Antonio cover the years 1892-2016. Minutes, reports, news bulletins, yearbooks, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, scrapbooks, programs and photographic materials document the structure, activities, interests, events and business transactions of the Club. The records of the Board of Directors, the General Assembly, and the Officers document the governance and the business of the club. In addition, matters such as resignations and internal club business are revealed in the Correspondence.
Material on the civic and social activities and interests of Club members can be found in the Department records, Committee records,Roundtable records, and Events records. The Events records in particular reveal the Club's participation in San Antonio's annual Fiesta celebration. The best overall view of the Club and its structure is available in the annual Club yearbooks, 1900-2016, located in Printed Materials, and in subsequent additions to the collection. These publications contain member lists, calendars of events and meetings, officer lists, by-laws, rules and a message from the Club president. Applications for membership, 1937-1982, record demographic information about club members, including schooling, place of birth, occupation and club affiliations. These documents are located in the Membership sub-series within series Committees. The largest group of records document the Roundtables, which are luncheon groups organized to encourage study and friendship. These groups are the core of the Club's civic and social activities, and record their activities both in individual documents as well as scrapbooks. The Additions series includes personal organizational files and posters, minutes, articles, and correspondence.

Photographs (and scrapbook materials) |
|
Images of groups, individuals, the Clubhouse and flower arrangements. Of note are the photographs of Club members from the early 1900s. Scrapbooks have been taken apart and given Lot Numbers for identification. Therefore the Photos from Lot 001 and the Scrapbook Materials from Lot 001 were all from the same scrapbook. |
