The Business & Professional Women's Club of San Antonio, a club organized to offer professional women an opportunity to gather to promote their interests as well as to provide "mutual helpfulness." The club was founded May 23, 1923 with 50 charter members. The club's main interests have been providing women with business opportunities, promoting opportunities for women in the professions and encouraging young women to enter the professions. Among their special interests have been legislation regarding professional women, the right of women to serve on juries, international relations and civic duty.
The Business & Professional Women's Club of San Antonio has served the city by sponsoring clubs for young women in high school, offering scholarships for young women and by fundraising for various charities. Activities of the club are well-documented in the pages of the local newspapers, San Antonio Express-News and the former San Antonio Light.
Club members in San Antonio have also been quite involved with the district, state and national organizations, attending conventions sponsored these groups. San Antonio club members also sponsored district and state conventions, notably in 1953 and 1974, as well as workshops and seminars. As of December, 1996, the Business & Professional Women's Club of San Antonio continues to meet and participate in community endeavors in the city.

The records of the Business & Professional Women's Club of San Antonio cover the years 1923-2006. Minutes, reports, bulletins, membership applications, yearbooks, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, scrapbooks, programs and photographic materials document the structure, activities, interests, events and business transactions of the Club. The information contained in the Yearbooks, President and Recording Secretary series reveal a great deal about the club's structure. The series offering the best overview of club activities on a daily basis include the History Books, and the Bulletins from San Antonio and District 2 clubs, and the state organization found in Special Committees. The Membership files in the Standing Committee series are valuable for a detailed look at members, their professions, hobbies and other demographic information. The International Relations sub-series, in Standing Committees, provides evidence of the club members' interest in outside affairs. For a financial overview of the club, the Financial Secretary series, as well as the Treasurer series are both excellent sources for holdings, payments, dues, and income of the club over the years. The Additions include a range of the above material.

Recording Secretary |
|
This is the largest and most comprehensive series. Each recording secretary kept a binder of correspondence, bulletins, minutes, committee reports which, over time, trace the club's philosophy, business transactions, annual celebrations, fund-raising drives, and growing membership. The original binders were dismantled but the original order was maintained. |

Special Committees |
|
Series includes reports and correspondence related to the function of five special committees created by the club: Audit, Bulletins, Club Policy, Emblem, and Historian. The Audit Committee served on an ad hoc basis to produce reports on the club's financial affairs. Bulletins contains a wealth of information about club life. The bulletins feature club news, personal information such as marriages, children born and illnesses and deaths of members, as well as information from the state and national organizations. The Club Policy Committee produced a handbook in 1957, and the Emblem Committee maintained catalogues and price lists, and coordinated the ordering and distribution of the B&PW emblems. History books created by the Historian feature clips from newspapers, photographs and other club information to commemorate the club's achievements. |

District II Business and Professional Women's Club |
|
District II of the Texas Business and Professional Women's Club covers an area of south central Texas which includes Bandera and LaSalle Counties, the cities of San Antonio, Carrizo Springs, Devine, Jourdanton, Uvalde and the Hill Country Clubs. The bulk of the correspondence in the series is that of District II Director Alice Frerichs, a San Antonian, who presided over the district from 1967-1969. Reports are another substantial portion of the series, including annual club reports to the district about their activities and club evaluations written by the district director. Invitations to other district meetings and conventions are also included. |

Texas Business and Professional Womens' Club |
|
Correspondence and state reports comprise the majority of this series. The correspondence is between state and District II officials of the club, and club members at the local level. The state reports are divided into financial and membership sub-series. Finances of the state organization, including contributions from district and local clubs are found in the financial files, and similarly detailed information about membership trends across the state in the membership files. Another sub-series of note is the minutes of the state board of directors meetings held monthly. These documents offer a detailed look at how the club functions at the state level. The series also contains issues of the state organization's publication, Texas Business and Professional Woman, in a nearly complete from 1948 to 1978. |
