Historical Background

Harry Newton Graves was born on April 4, 1877 in La Vernia, Texas. A graduate of Southwestern University, Graves was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1896. Graves practiced law privately, serving as city and county attorney in Williamson County and in the Texas House of Representatives (1929-1937) before being appointed to the Court of Criminal Appeals. He was elected to and served on the court from 1938 until his retirement in 1955.

Contents of the Collection

This collection consists of correspondence, mailing lists, campaign literature, and newspaper clippings related to Harry N. Graves’s 1938 campaign for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. It is arranged in four series.

The first series is Court of Criminal Appeals campaign correspondence, 1938. This series is composed of correspondence related to Graves’s 1938 campaign for election to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by county.

The second series is Court of Criminal Appeals campaign general material, 1938. Mailing lists, newspaper clippings, and campaign literature are included in this series.

The third series is Court of Criminal Appeals runoff campaign correspondence, 1938. This series is composed of correspondence related to Graves’s runoff campaign for election to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by county.

The fourth and final series is Court of Criminal Appeals runoff campaign general material, 1938. Mailing lists, newspaper clippings, and campaign literature related to the runoff campaign are included in this series.
