A professor of law at the University of Texas from 1925 until his death in 1964, Stumberg
was a nationally recognized authority on conflict of laws, criminal law, and admiralty, and
his textbooks on these subjects were used in law schools across the U.S. Recognized as an
outstanding teacher, he was promoted to the rank of "distinguished professor" in 1941. He
held law degrees from Columbia and Yale, was a Rhodes Scholar in 1913-1914, and taught law
at his alma mater, Louisiana State University, before coming to Texas. During World War II
he worked for the Board of Economic Warfare.

The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, publications, news clippings,
and manuscripts all created or gathered by Stumberg during his tenure at the law school.
Notable materials include correspondence and news clippings dating between 1942 and 1944
that document Stumberg's firing by the Board of Regents for protesting the 1942 dismissal of
three politically active University of Texas economics professors. Stumberg's research and
writings are documented by materials such as a partial manuscript for the 3rd edition of his
PRINCIPLES OF THE CONFLICTS OF LAWS (1963), miscellaneous notes, and extensive annotations
in casebooks authored by himself and others. Also present are a few clippings about
Stumberg, correspondence on Law School matters, and class materials.
