Biographical Sketch

Emmanuel Carballo was born July 2, 1929 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. As a child, Carballo was deeply interested in narrative prose and poetry, turning into a career-long interest in literature. He studied law at the Universidad de Guadalajara for a period before leaving his studies to become a professor of literature at the Instituto Tecnológico de la Universidad de Guadalajara.

In Guadalajara, Carballo founded and served as the director for two cultural magazines: Ariel, from 1949 to 1950, and Odiseo in 1952. 1953 would mark his departure from Guadalajara as Carballo moved to Mexico City after receiving a scholarship from the Centro Mexicano de Escritores. In Mexico City, his career flourished. From 1955 to 1969, Carballo was a professor of Literature of the Mexican Revolution for the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Meanwhile, he worked for a series of editorial publications, beginning as a editor for Universidad de México. With author Carlos Fuentes, Carballo co-founded the Revista Mexicana de Literatura in 1955. By 1961, Carballo, very experienced in the publication industry was made an editorial committee member for the Cuban magazine Casa de las Américas, holding that position until 1972. Simultaneously, from 1961 to 1966, Carballo served as the Literary Director for Empresas Editoriales, a publication house founded by Martín Luis Guzmán and Rafael Jiménez Siles.

In 1966, after leaving Empresas Editoriales, Carballo co-founded Editorial Diógenes, with the goal being to create an editorial that focused on publishing works by new and young authors. Tonally, the works published were often politically left, influenced by the politics of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and Che Guevara. Many authors were published by Editorial Diógenes, some examples including Luis Carrión Beltrán, Parménides García Saldaña, and Carlos Olvera. Editorial Diógenes closed its doors in 1986 after twenty years of publication.

In addition to his work as an editor and literary critic, Carballo was a renowned writer. He published two books of poetry, Amor se llama (1951) and Eso es todo (1972) and memoirs in Ya nada es igual (2004), and Diario público 1966-1968 (2005). He had a deep interest in the history of Mexican and Latin American literature, writing studies on authors such as Ramón López Velarde en Guadalajara (1953) and Gabriel García Márquez (1969), as well as historical overviews such as La Narrativa Mexicana de 1910 a 1969 (1979) and Encuesta Por qué, Para qué y Cómo escribo, aplicada a 124 Escritores Mexicanos (1977). Possibly his most famous work, 19 Protagonistas de la Literatura Mexicana del siglo XX (1965) featured a collection of interviews of 19 important Mexican authors of the twentieth century, including José Vasconcelos, Alfonso Reyes, José Gorostiza, Rosario Castellanos, and Carlos Fuentes.

As an educator, Carballo continued working as a professor of literature up until 1996. In addition to the earlier-mentioned positions he held at the Universidad de Guadalajara and UNAM, Carballo held visiting or full time positions at: the Sociedad General de Escritores de México (SOGEM) from 1989 to 1996, the University of Texas from 1992 to 1993, the Instituto Tlaxcalteca de Cultura from 1994 to 1995, and the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología from 1995 to 1996.

Among other accolades and honors, Carballo was awarded with the Premio Jalisco de Literatura 1990, Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes en Lingüística y Literatura 2006, and the Medalla Alfonso Reyes 2008.

Carballo passed away on April 20, 2014 in Mexico City. He had a wife of more than 40 years, the writer Beatriz Espejo.

Scope and Contents Note

The Emmanuel Carballo Papers are made up of correspondence, written works, collected manuscripts and publications, and photographs, documenting the career of Emmanuel Carballo, Mexican writer, literary critic, editor, journalist, and professor. This collection contains four series: correspondence, written works by Emmanuel Carballo, professional life, and collected materials.

Correspondence is the largest series and contains letters, notes, telegrams, postcards, emails, and manuscript drafts between Carballo and primarily Mexican and Latin American authors, poets, politicians, literary critics, and academics, as well as some correspondence between family and friends. Carballo mainly organized his correspondence according to whether letters were sent from or to him, and the current arrangement reflects that. The subseries "cartas a Emmanuel Carballo" contains letters sent to him from 1949 to 2011, conversely the subseries "cartas de Emmanuel Carballo" contains letters written by him from 1949 to 2004. Two additional subseries contain correspondence not originally organized in the aforementioned arrangements: "cartas a y de Emmanuel Carballo" contains mixed correspondence from 1999 to 2014 and "correspondencia entre Carballo y escritores" contains correspondence between Carballo and Latin American poets and writers such as Reinaldo Arenas, Alfonso Reyes, Laura Villaseñor, and Carballo’s wife, Beatriz Espejo.

Written works by Emmanuel Carballo contains drafts, notes, research, and books of Carballo’s writings, encompassing his work as a poet, essayist, historian, literary critic, interviewer, and journalist. The first subseries, "prosa: ensayos, articulos, extractos de libros" contains essays, some being draft versions of those later used for published books such as Ya Nada es Igual and Diario Público. The subseries "trabajos, organizados cronológicamente," contains writings organized by Carballo according to decades from the 1950s to the 1990s, some used as reference materials for other writings. The next subseries "poesía" documents Carballo’s poetry from 1946 to 1999 and contains excerpts of his book Eso es Todo. "Libros con correcciones y notas" contains full books written by Carballo, or books for which Carballo wrote the prologue. The books contain handwritten notes or edits by or likely by Carballo. "Crítica" contains some book reviews by Carballo from 1958 to 1987. The final subseries, "periodismo," contains materials from Carballo’s capacity as a journalist from 1981 to 1982.

Professional life contains administrative documents, newspapers, correspondence, interviews, and event programs, documenting Carballo’s professional capacity as a publisher and editor. The "Editorial Diógenes" subseries contains administrative documents, catalogs, author contracts, and news clippings from Editorial Diógenes, Carballo’s publication house from 1966 to 1986. The "viajes y recuerdos" subseries contains materials from Carballo’s international visits and work as well as miscellaneous keepsakes and notes. Notable are materials from Carballo’s work with Casa de las Americas in Cuba. The "publicación y editorialismo" subseries contains issues of Ariel and Odiseo, periodicals that Carballo founded and directed at the beginning of his career in Guadalajara. The "entrevistas con Emmanuel Carballo" subseries contains interviews with Carballo from 1974 to 2007 that provide additional insights into his lengthy career. Finally, the "homenajes y premios" subseries contains materials from awards ceremonies both for Carballo and others. Examples are Carballo receiving the Premio Jalisco in 1990, the Premio Nacional de Lingüística y Literatura in 2006 and the Medalla Alfonso Reyes in 2008, in addition to materials from Carballo’s time as a judge for the Premio de Literatura Latinoamericano y del Caribe Juan Rulfo in 2003.

Collected materials, contains works by other authors and publishers, as well as photographs, most taken by other photographers, some of unknown origin. "Archivos y homenajes de otros autores" contains files on other authors, a news article on writer Carlos Fuentes and sketch of Carballo by Fuentes, photocopies of writer Ruben Romero’s archives, made by Carballo, and letters written to poet José Gorostiza. This subseries also contains homages and writings for the Mexican writers Alfonso Reyes and Guillermo Tovar de Teresa. Notable within the writings on Alfonso Reyes is a hand drawn sketch of Reyes by Carlos Fuentes. "Periódicos y revistas" contains newspapers and periodicals created between the years of 1930 and 1979. Included are the periodicals Monterrey and Fuensanta created by Alfonso Reyes. "Manuscritos" contains drafts of publications by Mexican authors. Some are original drafts such as the original draft of De Perfil by José Agustín or Pasión de Antonio Urbino by Lisandro Otero. Some are drafts of materials published by Editorial Diógenes such as a draft of Avándaro by Luis Carrión and contain edits likely made by Carballo. Other materials were likely gifted to Carballo such as the original of Esta Señal Oculta by Guillermo Samperio. The final subseries "materiales visuales" contains a map of Mexico City and photographs collected by Carballo of Mexican writers, Cuba, an unidentified boxer, and other subjects.
