Historical Note

Founded in 1779, Real de Catorce is a historic town that at one time was a prosperous colonial silver mining hub and later active in gold mining operations. Set in the Sierra de Catorce range, Real de Catorce at one time had several operating mines including Mina de los Milagros, Mina de San Agustín, Mina de Concepción, and Mina de Santa Ana. Mina de Concepción was opened in November of 1850. By 1908 the only mine that continued to operate in Real de Catorce was Mina de Santa Ana, which was eventually closed in 1938.
