Biographical Sketch

Pianist, piano teacher, and cultural figure, Esperanza Cruz was born in 1909 in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico. Her mother, Isabel Vazquez, was a piano teacher and proved to be a great influence on Esperanza both artistically and musically. A talented pianist from an early age, Esperanza Cruz soon was performing throughout Veracruz with her first performance being in 1918.

Cruz moved to Mexico City and enrolled at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in 1919 where she was the student of famed composer and teacher Manuel M. Ponce. She would graduate from the Conservatorio in 1927 as a concert pianist and a licensed piano teacher. In 1928, after several years of struggling to receive funds, Cruz was finally supported by the state government of Veracruz to go to Europe to study and perform. She would spend a year in Berlin under the tutelage of Leonold Kreutzer. On a later extended time in Paris, Cruz would study at the Paris Conservatory under famed composer and pianist Isidor Phillip. Other studies in Europe included attending master level courses taught by Alfred Cortot in Paris and Egon Petri and Alexander Borovsky in Berlin.

In 1933 she would return to Mexico for good and continue to grow as a concert pianist and as a piano teacher at the same Conservatory where she once was a student. In 1943 Cruz married Mexican writer, politician, and philosopher José Vasconcelos. They would have one child together, Hector Vasconcelos, who would become a pianist in his own right and an ex-ambassador of Mexico to Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. Cruz and Vasconcelos separated in 1958, one year before Vasconcelos' death.

In 1942 Esperanza Cruz was one of the founders of the Seminario de cultura mexicana and she would continue to be an active concert pianist until 1959. Esperanza Cruz died in 1999.

Scope and Contents Note

The Esperanza Papers consist of approximately 8 linear feet. The collection is organized into eight different series: Correspondence, Biographical Materials, Writings, Sheet Music, Concert Programs, Printed Materials, Photographs, and Oversize Materials.

The Correspondence series is organized by region into three subseries: 1) By Year, arranged chronologically. 2) By Individual, arranged alphabetically. 3) Professional, arranged chronologically. Major correspondents include Joaquín Amparán, Alxander Borovsky, Pepe Castellanos, García Cabral, Egon Petri, and Isabel Viuda de Cruz. Additionally there are two folders containing a multitude of poems sent to Esperanza Cruz by male admirers.

The Biographical Materials series is arranged chronologically and includes personal items of Esperanza Cruz such as diplomas and coursework, passports, and marriage documents. Also included are documents related to Esperanza's mother, Isabel Vazquez.

Most notable are writings by Cruz about Manuel Ponce and José Vasconcelos. Also included are a number of interviews of Esperanza Cruz taken by a variety of writers.

The Sheet Music series is arranged alphabetically by composer. The sheet music includes the hand-written fingerings of Esperanza Cruz, which guided her through the musical pieces. The Concert Programs series is organized into three subseries: 1) Concerts by Esperanza Cruz, arranged chronologically. 2) Concerts of Students by Esperanza Cruz, arranged chronologically. 3) Collected Concert Programs, arranged alphabetically by country. The programs show Esperanza Cruz's active performance schedule from her earliest performances in 1918 through the 1970s. Cruz also collected a great number of programs during her time living and traveling in Europe.

The Printed Materials series includes two subseries: 1) Journals/Magazines, arranged by type and chronologically. 2) Newspapers, arranged chronologically. Of note are several musical journals including Cultura musical, Gaceta musical, and Spectacles et concerts.
