Historical Note

This collection was compiled by Benson Latin American Collection archivists during the 1980s and 1990s, from donated as well as purchased materials. The sheet music within comes from across Latin America, from Argentina to the Virgin Islands, and spans the early 1900s to the late 1980s. A majority of the materials are published sheet music from regional publishers, while other pieces are computer-printed by the composers themselves. The collection also contains a scrapbook, performance ephemera, music competition materials, and several audio recordings.

Scope and Contents Note

The Sheet Music collection is a compiled collection of 20th century Latin American music, formed from both donations received and purchases by the BLAC as well as the UT Austin Library. While the collection is primarily published sheet music, there is a small amount of performance and competition ephemera, as well as several audio recordings featuring works by composers whose sheet music appears in the collection. The collection has been organized into series by country of publication.

The Argentina is divided into two subseries: 1) Argentinian sheet music (arranged alphabetically by composer). There is additional sheet music by Argentine composers in the Oversized Materials. 2) Argentinian audiocassettes (arranged sequentially by original order when they were first acquired.)

The Brazil series is also divided into two subseries: 1) Brazilian sheet music, (arrranged alphabetically by composer.) 2) Brazilian songs collection, which was acquired separately and is primarily photocopies (arranged alphabetically by song title.)

The Mexico series is divided into two subseries: 1) Mexican sheet music (arranged alphabetically by composer.) 2) Mexican music ephemera, arranged sequentially as found in the acquisitions.

The series for Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the Virgin Islands are all much smaller and thus not divided into subseries. The materials in these series are arranged sequentially.

The Oversized Materials series contains sheet music from Argentina and Peru.
