Abstract: Materials related to the exploration and early settlement of the provinces on the northern frontiers of New Spain, including Nueva Vizcaya, Nuevo León, and what is today New Mexico. The materials were collected by John Lloyd Mecham, long-time Government professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Included are five original manuscripts (1581-1612) with the bulk of the collection being copied materials (1534-1789) from the Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla, Spain.

Biographical Sketch

Professor, scholar, author, John Lloyd Mecham was born July 16, 1893 in San Bernardino, California. Mecham was a professor emeritus of government at University of Texas at Austin. A political scientist with a focus on Latin America, Mecham taught at UT-Austin for 38 years and published several influential books, including The United States and inter-American Security, 1889-1960, Francisco de Ibarra and la Nueva Vizcaya, Church and state in Latin America: a history of politicoecclesiastical relations.

Most related to this collection - one of Dr. Mecham's early interests during his distinguished career was the exploration and settlement of the provinces on the northern frontiers of New Spain during the period 1560-1620. Dr. Mecham spent the years of 1920-1921 researching these topics at the Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla, Spain. During this two-year period Mecham acquired transcripts of manuscripts related to the explorations of Francisco de Urdiñola in Nueva Vizcaya, Luis de Carvajal in Nuevo León, Juan de Oñate in New Mexico, and others.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection consists of 1.25 linear feet of materials, with the majority of the collection being typescript and handwritten copies of materials from the Archivo General de Indias.

The Original Manuscripts series is arranged chronologically. Highlights include original writings by Luis de Carvajal and Francico de Urdiñola.

The Typescript Copies of Archivo General de Indias Records series is arranged by region and within the region, alphabetically and chronologically. The Archivo General de Indias numbering system related to the documents can be found on each folder. Highlights include a large number of records related to early explorations and settlement of the provinces on the northern frontiers of New Spain: New Mexico, Nueva Vizcaya, and Nuevo León.

Oversize Materials includes a hand-drawn map of the New Mexico region and an original 1865 document from the Treasury Department of Guatemala.
