Biographical Sketch

Poet, essayist, and literary journal/newspaper director, Pablo Antonio Cuadra was born on November 4, 1912 in Managua, Nicaragua. Known affectionately as PAC, Pablo Antonio Cuadra was raised in Granada and grew up in a household filled with an appreciation of literature, history, politics, and the arts. PAC attended school in Granada at the Colegio Centroamérica where from a young age he showed promise and interest in literature and writing.

In 1927 he founded a school newsletter called Diario Colegial and in 1929 he was published in a literary publication from Granada called Criterio. After several more years of study and other publications in Nicaraguan newspapers and journals, PAC graduated from Colegio Centroamérica in 1931. Also in 1931, along with José Coronel Urtecho, Joaquín Pasos and several others, Pablo Antonio Cuadra founded the Movimiento de Vanguardia, an influential literary movement in Nicaragua and Latin America that sought to strengthen Nicaraguan identity and culture through poetry and prose.

PAC's earliest published works include Poemas nicaragüenses, which, like many of PAC's later works, addressed indigenous, mythical, and religious elements and their roles in Nicaraguan identity. In 1936 Cuadra graduated from la Universidad Santo Tomás de Oriente y Medio Dia with a degree in law. During the 1930s and 1940s Nicaragua faced political turmoil marked by U.S.A. intervention, Sandino's success of 1933, and the ensuing dictatorship of the Somoza family. PAC would undergo a self exile in Mexico and Spain from 1946-1950.

Cuadra directed several influential literary journals including Cuaderno del Taller San Lucas (1942-1944, 1951) and most prominently El Pez y la serpiente (1961-2001).

Beyond literary journals, Cuadra also had a major impact as co-director of the daily newspaper La prensa beginning in 1954. PAC co-drected the newspaper with his cousin Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal from 1954-1978 when Chamorro was assassinated by Somoza-backed gunmen. PAC would continue to intermittently serve as director of La prensa until 1999. In 1964, while at La prensa, PAC began his popular column "Escritos a máquina" and in 1976 began the influential literary supplement "La prensa literaria."

With direction of La prensa came much political scrutiny and opposition from mutiple sides during the Somoza regime (with the newspaper's temporary destruction by Somoza in 1979), the revolution, and the initial Sandinista government beginning in 1979. Cuadra would impose another self-exile to the United States from 1986-1989 where he spent most of the time as a professor in the Spanish & Portuguese Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

PAC returned to Nicaragua in 1989 where he continued his work at La prensa and would be named as the rector of Universidad Católica Redemptoris Mater in 1994. PAC received many awards through the years including el Premio Centroamericano de Poesía Rubén Diarío (1959), el Premio Rimini de Italia (1991), and el Premio Interamericano de Cultura Gabriela Mistral de la OEA (1991).

Cuadra continued to be active as a writer, editor, and essayist until his death in 2002. Major works by PAC include essays such as "Promisión de México y otros ensayos" (1945), "El Nicaragüense" (1967), "Aventura literaria del mesitzaje" (1987). His most well-known poetry collections include Poemas nicaragüenses (1934), Por los caminos van los campesinos (1957), El jaguar y la luna (1959), Cantos de cifar y mar dulce (1979), and Siete Árboles contra el artardecer (1980).
