Abstract: The Los del Valle Oral History Project was launched in 1992 by University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley History Professor Dr. Manuel F. Medrano with the goal of collecting and preserving historical memories in Texas' Rio Grande Valley, a region that has been historically underdocumented in archival and published research. Interviewees include folklorist and scholar Don Américo Paredes, Tejano writers Rolando Hinojosa and Oscar Cásares, writer and poet Carmen Tafolla, and artist Carmen Lomas Garza as well as nationally acclaimed anthropologists, writers, ethnobotanists, musicians and military heroes. This collection is significant because it is one of the first to use video recording instead of only audio recording for Latino interviewees, and it includes both edited profiles and raw footage.

The Los del Valle Oral History Project includes autobiographical sketches of legendary folklorist Americo Peredes, prolific Tejano writer Rolando Hinojosa-Smith, and Conjunto pioneer Narciso Martinez. The uniqueness of the Valley's people, culture, and herritage is also conveyed through historical accounts of the Brownsville shrimping industry, the Charro Days border celebration, and medicinal and edible plants of South Texas.
