Biographical Sketch

William Jackson was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and Senior Fellow at Dominican University. He held both a Ph.D in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard and a Master's in Library Science from the University of Illinois. Early in his career, Dr. Jackson was awarded the first Fulbright research grant in library science to France, which he spent in Paris, studying the Latin American holdings of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. In 1956, following his return from Paris, he undertook an assignment in Argentina for the U.S. State Department. This was the first of many assignments– from Haiti to Colombia to Venezuela and beyond– where Dr. Jackson taught, advised, and worked with regional leaders in library science, including Francaise Sabor, the grand dame of Argentinian librarianship, and Jeanette de Criado of the Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala.
