Maria Martin Papers, circa 1990s-2000s
Maria Martin founded Latino USA in 1993 and acted as executive producer and correspondent. Before founding Latino USA, Martin was an editor and producer for NPR's Latin American and Latino content. During her time as National Public Radio's Latino Affairs editor in the early 1990s, she was instrumental in the hiring of a significant number of Latin@s by the news department. A founding member and vice-chair of the News Division's Affirmative Action Task Force, she worked to increase the number of Latin@s and persons of color working in the public radio system, and to improve working conditions and mentoring systems for these individuals.
