Biographical Sketch

The Ernesto Cardenal Papers were acquired by the Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin in May of 2016. Cardenal is a renowned Nicaraguan poet, priest, sculptor, and social activist. The papers span his life and are representative of his achievements and impact in the literary, artistic, activist, and spiritual worlds in Latin America and beyond.

Ernesto Cardenal was born in Granada, Nicaragua in 1925. His childhood years were marked by an ever-growing interest in literature and writing, which continued through his studies of literature and humanities as a teenager in Managua. From 1942 to 1947 he earned his Master of Letters degree from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. In 1948 he was admitted to Columbia University in New York City where he entered a master’s program in North American literature. It was at Columbia where Cardenal encountered the work of poets such as Ezra Pound, Walt Whitman, T.S. Elliot, and others. The impact of these writers, in particular Pound, helped develop Cardenal’s technique of exteriorism, which Cardenal defines as, “subjective poetry: narrative and anecdotal, made with the elements of real life and with concrete things, with proper names and precise details and exact dates and numbers and facts and sayings.”

He returned to Nicaragua in 1950, where he participated in the 1954 April Revolution against Anastasio Somoza García's regime. This attempt was unsuccessful and many of Cardenal’s compatriots were killed. Cardenal then entered the Trappist Monastery of Gethsemani in Kentucky under the guidance of Thomas Merton. In 1959 he left the monastery to study theology in Cuernavaca, Mexico

Cardenal attended seminary school near Medellín, Colombia and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1965. After this, he went to the Solentiname Islands in Lake Nicaragua where he founded a Christian, almost monastic community, which eventually led to the founding of an artists' colony, which featured poetry workshops and 'pintura primivista' or (primitivist painting).

Cardenal collaborated closely with the leftist Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (Sandinista National Liberation Front, or FSLN), to successfully overthrow Anastasio Somoza Debayle's regimen in 1979. He was named Minister of Culture by the new Sandinista regime and served in this position until 1987.

Thoughtout these descades of activity as a priest and political activist, Cardenal continued to write poetry. Some of his most well-known titles were published during these times including Hora 0 (1960), Gethsemani, KY (1960), Epigramas (1961), Salmos (1964), Oración por Marilyn Monroe y otros poemas (1965), El estrecho dudoso (1966), El Evangelio en Solentiname (1975), Vuelos de Victoria (1984), and Cántico cósmico (1989).

Cardenal left the FSLN in 1994, protesting the authoritarian direction of the party under Daniel Ortega. However, he maintains his leftist opinions. Cardenal has received many awards and honorary doctorates for his poetry, and social activism, including the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry in 2009 and the Reina Sofia Prize for Poetry in 2012. His works have been translated into many other languages and are widely acclaimed.
