Biographical Note

Dr. Ricardo C. Ainslie is a certified psychologist who examines the psychology of immigration, racial conflict within communities, and the ties between collective and individual identity across disciplines. Dr. Ainslie's varied approach to these matters has resulted in a rich output of work that uses books, documentary films, and photographic exhibits. His work covers a variety of subjects ranging from racial violence and segregation in Texas to the Mexican drug war.

Dr. Ainslie was born in Mexico City to his parents, Roberto Francisco Ainslie and Vern Elizabeth Harris and has two siblings - Yvonne Chavez and Robert Ainslie. He came to the United States in 1966 for college and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972. Dr. Ainslie received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1979. Since receiving his doctorate, he has been a professor at The University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Educational Psychology.

Dr. Ainslie began his work as a documentary filmmaker in 1999 with Crossover: A Story Of Desegregation, his first film. The film was grant-funded through Humanities Texas, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Ainslie has gone on to make four more documentaries dealing with violence, psychology, and the trauma of war. He has gone on to continue to explore these same subjects through the five books he's written over the course of his career.

While Dr. Ainslie's work is highly varied and interdisciplinary, the approach he takes to his work, regardless of format, remains constant. According to his website, this methodology is a mix of "anthropology, American Studies, Liberal Arts, and creative non-fiction" which he calls "psychoanalytic ethnography." With every project, Dr. Ainslie conducts in-depth interviews with his subjects and conducts thorough research, making for a rich collection of research on controversial topics.

Dr. Ainslie is a Guggenheim Fellow and has also been the recipient of various other honors and awards, including the Rockefeller's Bellagio Residency, the American Psychological Association's Division of Psychoanalysis Science Award, and the National Multicultural Conference and Summit's Lifetime Achievement Community Engagement Award. He is also a member of the Texas Institute of Letters and the Texas Philosophical Society. Dr. Ainslie is affiliated with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS) and assumed leadership of their LLILAS Mexico Center - a research center focused around international collaboration - in 2017.
