Biographical Sketch

Dr. Federico Subervi was a professor in the Kent State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and was previously a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and director of the new Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets at Texas State University. Dr. Subervi earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico and went on to receive his Doctorate in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Dr. Federico Subervi is currently (2018) Visiting Leverhulme Professor at the School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds, where he is conducting research about the media system and politics in Puerto Rico. Since the early 1980s, he has conducted research, published and taught classes on a broad range of issues related to the mass media and ethnic minorities, especially Latinos in the United States. In addition to more than fifty journal articles, essays, book chapters and reports on these subjects, he is the editor and an author of The Mass Media and Latino Politics: Studies of U.S. Media Content, Campaign Strategies and Survey Research: 1984-2004. He was also Fulbright Research Scholar in Brazil and in Chile.

Scope and Contents Note

The Federico Subervi Collection has been divided into three series: Television and Media, Politics, and Audiovisual Material.

The Television and Media series includes material such as TV program press materials, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reports, clippings and brochures, academic writings on Latinos in the Media, materials related to Brazil and Television, and materials related to Children's television. There are various materials on television shows including material for Gabriela. This series also contains Subervi's "Spanish Language Television Coverage of Health News" in addition to materials from the popular PBS children's program Maya and Miguel on which Subervi served as an advisor.

The Politics series includes material relating to Latinos and U.S politics from the 1980's through 2010. This series has material related to both the Republican and Democratic Parties and their relationship with the U.S Latino population. This series includes articles and writings about the Latino electorate, presidential policies, material concerning presidential elections since 1992, press releases, and Pew reports concerning Latinos in the U.S. This series also includes "Twelve" newsletters that pertain to Latinos in U.S politics in addition to Clinton/Gore campaign buttons. The brochures and clippings folder contains material such as Andale and material from factcheckED.org.

The Audiovisual series includes cassette tapes of radio shows and interviews with political and media leaders in the United States as well as scholars researching topics in journalism and media. The series also includes VHS tapes containing material such as Brazilian television shows and advertisements, political campaign advertisements, and programming about Latinos and the media. The cassette tapes are arranged chronologically and the VHS tapes are arranged by subject and then chronologically.
