The UIL continues to operate as part of the University of Texas, under the auspices of the Vice President for Diversity & Community Engagement, and provides educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests.

The Latino History Essay Competition was founded in 2011 by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at UT-Austin and run by UIL beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. In its initial year the competition was open to students in South Texas; beginning with 2012-2013 the competition was opened to students statewide.
