The University Interscholastic League (UIL) was created by The University of Texas at Austin in 1910 to provide leadership and guidance to public school debate and athletic teachers. The UIL continues to operate as part of the University of Texas, under the auspices of the Vice President for Diversity & Community Engagement, and provides educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests.

The Latino History Essay Competition was founded in 2011 by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at UT-Austin and run by UIL beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. In its initial year the competition was open to students in South Texas; beginning with 2012-2013 the competition was opened to students statewide.
