Biographical Sketch

Born in Laredo, Texas in 1922, Pedro “Pete” Tijerina was a lifelong advocate for Mexican American civil rights. Tijerina attended school at the University of Texas at Austin as well as St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and passed the Texas Bar in 1951, successively working as a criminal trial lawyer in San Antonio. Tijerina was an active member of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), serving as the president of San Antonio LULAC council #2, the state civil rights chairman, and subsequently as Texas LULAC Regional Governor. Tijerina went on to found the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in 1968, and later became a Justice on the Fourth Court of Appeals in San Antonio, Texas.

Scope and Contents Note

This collection measures 3 linear feet and includes materials from Tijerina’s involvement with LULAC, MALDEF, and as a Justice of the Texas Court of Appeals, as well as materials related to Tijerina’s personal research. The collection contains correspondence, news clippings, photographs, and various printed materials. The bulk of the materials are from Tijerina’s time in LULAC, from 1955-1957, when Tijerina was serving as Regional Governor for the Texas LULAC districts. A scrapbook which documents this time in LULAC through photographs and news clippings is also included in the collection. The collection is organized in four series: LULAC Records, MALDEF Records, Justice of Appeals, and Research Materials.
