Biographical Sketch

Ruthe Lewin Winegarten (1929-2004) was the first of two children of Charles and Celia (Cohen) Lewin, born on August 26, 1929, in Dallas. She was a historian, activist, scholar, author, lecturer and a pioneer in women's history. In her work, Winegarten sought to document marginalized histories such as those of African-American women, Jews, Latinas and women of Mexican descent. She received her Bachelor's in anthropology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1950, and a Masters of in social work from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1970. In 1978 she served as an editor of the Texas Women's History Project: Bibliography. She also researched and curated exhibits such as "Texas Women: A Celebration of History" which toured the state in the early eighties. She wrote or contributed to eighteen books during her life. Las Tejanas, published in 2003, was her last completed book. In 2003, Winegarten was elected a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association. She passed away in Austin in June 2004 at the age of 74.

Teresa Palomo Acosta (1949-) was born in McGregor, Texas, on March 9, 1949. She is the youngest of four children born to Sabina Palomo Acosta and Andres Alderete Acosta. Her parents both descended from Mexican migrant workers who settled in Central Texas in the 1930s. Acosta is a journalist, educator, poet, researcher, university administrator, and historian. She received her BA in ethnic studies from The University of Texas in 1974 and her Masters in journalism from Columbia in 1977. Her poetry and fiction, which often draw upon and uplift the experiences of Mexican American women, have been nationally recognized and anthologized. Acosta was part of a third generation of Tejana historians writing in the 1970s, along with Martha Cotera, Carmen Tafolla and Inés Hernández. These women strove to write Chicanas into the historical record, contributing to the burgeoning field of Chicana studies in the 1980s. In 1988 Acosta was one of several research associates hired by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) to write encyclopedic entries for the New Handbook of Texas (1996), focusing on contributions of Chicana women and women in the arts.

In the late 1990s, European American women historians at UT San Antonio (UTSA) also began working to fill in the gaps on Tejana research and scholarship. UTSA sponsored Winegarten and historian Yolanda Chávez Leyva to develop the book that became Las Tejanas: 300 Years of History. Winegarten had been researching and collecting materials on Tejana history since the late 1970s. She continued gathering materials throughout the writing of the book, a span of approximately twenty years. When Leyva had to leave the project, Acosta joined Winegarten in 2000 as a researcher and co-author.

Las Tejanas is the first general history of Tejanas, women of Spanish-Mexican origin in Texas, spanning from 1700-2000. It was a much-needed intervention in a field that had received little support or recognition from Texas institutions, history departments, Chicano studies, or women's studies. Las Tejanas was described by its authors as pertinent and timely due to the large increase in the Mexican American population in Texas, as well as the contribution by Tejanas and other scholars to The New Handbook of Texas that had resulted in a the first substantial coverage of Mexican American women's history in the state. Las Tejanas provides a survey of Tejana history in the state, focusing on Tejana community leaders, educators, professionals and politicians, labor organizers, and artists. It provides a substantive accounts of Tejana history from the colonial period to 1900, as well as documenting the contributions of modern Mexican American women in Texas.

Winegarten and Acosta hoped that Las Tejanas would encourage future generations of students, scholars, community members, and educators to explore Mexican American women's histories and contribute to public knowledge on the subject. Las Tejanas has encouraged archival research, institutional support for the topic, community events, conferences, and symposiums on Tejana studies, many of which are documented in this collection. Las Tejanas won the Texas Library Association's Texas Reference Source Award in 2003 and the Texas Historical Commission's T. R. Fehrenbach Award in 2004 for the best book in Texas history.

Scope and Contents Note

This collection documents the research, writing, and publication of Las Tejanas, a groundbreaking and award-winning historical survey authored by Teresa Palomo Acosta and Ruthe Winegarten. It includes extensive biographical, topical, and visual materials collected during the research and writing of the book, correspondence and documentation of Acosta and Winegarten's collaboration and writing process, and materials related to the publication of the book. The collection is arranged into four series: Research Materials, Manuscript Preparation Materials, Post-Publication Materials, and Personal Materials.

Research Materials provides information on the research process and evidence that became Las Tejanas. It has five subseries. Biography and Subject Files includes the exhaustive set of primary and secondary documents used to recreate the historical trajectory of Mexican American women in Texas. The files in this subseries include articles, newspaper clippings, ephemera, transcripts of interviews, sections of academic theses, correspondence, photocopies of archival materials, and typed and handwritten notes. The Biography and Subject Files subseries is complemented by another eponymously titled subseries, Excerpts Files, which contains scholarly materials consulted by the authors. These works informed the structuring of Las Tejanas into three broad eras, pre-1900s, 1900-1940s, and post 1940s, as well as its depiction of the evolution of Mexican American women from mestizas and colonists to revolutionaries to participants in a wide range of professional, social and community activities. A majority of the documents in the subseries are photocopies of book chapters or articles, along with library finding aids, collections pamphlets, materials documenting a museum exhibit on Las Tejanas, correspondence, news articles, and typewritten notes. Additional Texas and Latinx Materials includes research materials that the authors collected but later determined to be outside the scope of the book. Indices includes subject, bibliographic, and chronological card files that they created as part of their writing process. Audio-Visual Materials contains the art images, published photographs and outtakes, and other audio-visual materials collected for this project, including black-and-white and color prints, art slides, image photocopies, VHS tapes, and audio cassettes. The materials depict a wide range of subjects and time periods in Mexican-American history along with the authors' annotations. Highlights of this subseries include Acosta's family photographs, featured in the ''Life in Rural Texas'' and ''Arts and Culture'' chapters of Las Tejanas, and photographs of Acosta conducting interviews for the book in Crystal City, Texas.

Manuscript Preparation Materials contains materials related to the conceptualization, writing and publication of Las Tejanas. It is comprised of four subseries. Correspondence includes correspondence between the authors, between Winegarten and other potential collaborators, most notably the historian Yolanda Chávez Leyva, and between the authors and potential informants. Grants and Fellowships includes applications and supporting materials submitted between 1998 and 2002 to funders including the Austin Writers' League, the Center for the Study of Women and Gender (UT-San Antonio), and Texas Woman's University, documenting the evolution of the project through Winegarten's descriptions and budget documents. Writing Process is made up of documents that provide snapshots of the project at stages from conceptualization to completed manuscript, including early notes and brainstorming, parts of drafts, readers' reports, and the authors' responses. Publication Process contains documents related to the publication of Las Tejanas with the University of Texas Press. This subseries includes a large amount of material related to the photographs used in the book, including permissions forms and correspondence with rightsholders.

Post-Publication Materials contains materials related to the recognition, promotion, and publicity of Las Tejanas. It has three subseries. Promotion and Publicity contains materials pertaining to the University of Texas Press' marketing of the book, book signing events, and its press coverage. Scholarly Recognition contains awards, conference papers and symposia, and reviews. Public Reception includes book reviews, author responses, and news coverage of book signings.

Personal Materials includes a small group of items that are tangentially connected to the book. It contains materials obtained by Winegarten for Acosta regarding a relative, Teresa Lozano, notes from Ann Richards, Teresa Long, and Judith Zaffirini responding to the publication of Las Tejanas, and a program from Ruthe Winegarten's funeral.
