Benson Latin American Collection, The University of Texas at Austin |
Historian, archivist, and educator, Carlos E. Castañeda was born November 11, 1896, in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. His father was a professor of French and government at the College of San Juan in Matamoros, but the family moved to Brownsville around 1910. Castañeda's parents both died before he was 15, leaving him with 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Though he began his college career as an engineering major, Castañeda switched to his major to history (under the influence of E.C. Barker), and graduated with a BA from The University of Texas in 1921, having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was married in 1922, and his first daughter, Gloria, was born in 1923, the same year that he obtained his MA from The University of Texas and began teaching Spanish for the College of William and Mary in Virginia.
In 1927, Castañeda was asked to return to The University of Texas, to take control of the newly acquired Genaro García collection, the basis for the Benson Latin American Collection today. While acting as librarian for this collection, Castañeda began to work on his PhD, and to produce more articles on the early history of Texas. He also, in conjunction with Winnie Allen, started and ran the Mexican Photo Print Company, in order to recover copies of documents which he discovered in Mexico, a project that was doomed to failure once the Depression hit in 1929.
Castañeda finished his doctorate in 1932, his dissertation being a translation of the famous Morfi's History of Texas, a text believed lost, which he re-discovered while searching through the records of a Fransiscan monastery. Also in 1932 his second daughter, Consuelo, was born.
Castañeda did not begin his career as a full professor for The University of Texas until 1940, after some protracted debate in the 1930s concerning his salary and teaching responsibilities (Castañeda felt that his salary had been reduced because of his ethnicity). It was these issues that led to his leaving in 1933 to become the Superintendent of the San Felipe School District in Del Rio, Texas, where he met with resistance from white families towards a Mexican superintendent. He would stay only a year.
After returning to The University of Texas for the 1935 school year, Castañeda continued not only his career as a professor, but his writing of Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, a seven-volume work on the early history of Texas. The writing of these books would span decades, the last volume not printed until shortly before Castañeda's death. Also shortly after his return to the university, Castañeda was knighted by the Catholic Church as a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, and in 1951 became a Knight Commander in the Order of Isabel the Catholic of Spain. These honors were granted on the basis of Castañeda's long-time work with the Catholic community and Catholic history more generally.
Being concerned with the plight of minorities in Texas (such as in the San Felipe School district, where he was forced to obtain a court order to even open the school), Castañeda took another leave of absence in 1943 to work for the Fair Employment Practice Commission (FEPC), an agency that was concerned with helping minorities to obtain the same working conditions and jobs that whites were granted in the 1940s. The Commission would not last past the World War, however, and Castañeda returned to his teaching duties. He continued to actively work against discrimination, and became involved with the Pan American Union, for whom he gave a radio address in 1948 that was broadcast all over the New World.
In the 1950s Castañeda's health failed: he suffered three heart attacks during the decade, which severely limited his ability to write, teach, and stay active in his many causes. The author of twelve books and over eighty articles, and recipient of many honors, Castañeda died on April 3, 1958, at the age of 62.

II. Correspondence, 1924-1958 |
|
Correspondence and enclosures. Castañeda's correspondence reflects
the range of his personal and professional activities. His professional
correspondence includes correspondence with scholars from around
the United States, Mexico and elsewhere; his activities related to numerous
domestic and foreign groups and organizations, such as the American Historical
Association; his correspondence with many colleagues, admirers, aspiring
authors, and researchers, as well as his relationships with various
institutions and schools in Texas. Castañeda's long-time membership in the
Texas Knights of Columbus and its Historical Commission are well documented in
this series, as well as his correspondence with Catholic
priests, nuns, officials, and laypeople, especially within the context of
various scholarly Catholic associations. This series also includes personal
correspondence with family and friends, most notably Fred Chabot, Alonso
Perales, and a nephew, Carlos Castañeda Villarreal, as well as letters relating
to his personal activities and hobbies. Note that the earliest correspondence
is in photocopied form, and comprises the subseries entitled "Early Materials
(College of William and Mary)." |

III. Literary Productions,
1923-1958 7 linear feet, 3 inches |
|
Series Scope and Contents |
|
Manuscript material in handwritten and typescript form, notes and
note cards, publishers' proofs and reprints, correspondence, ephemeral printed
material, research materials including transcriptions and translations of
archival documents, and photographs make up Castañeda's files relating to his
literary productions. |
|
Manuscripts by Castañeda includes drafts of published works;
unpublished and incomplete works; public addresses; occasionally, printed
versions of essays; publishers' galleys; and associated notes and
correspondence. The subseries include Essays, Addresses, and Incomplete
Manuscripts; a subseries devoted entirely to Our Catholic Heritage in Texas; and Miscellaneous and Unidentified Items.
Castañeda did not sign all his works, and his files included some
writings by other authors, which were separated to the series of Collected
Materials. Though the works in the first subseries all appear to be by Castañeda, it is
possible that the following list includes unsigned works by others.
Our Catholic Heritage in Texas is a large subseries, with many drafts, in some cases, for each volume. Included in this subseries are some research materials used for volume VII of the work.
The Miscellaneous and Unidentified Manuscripts includes a number of short
manuscripts in outline form, which may be notes for papers, addresses,
classroom lectures, or possibly are research notes.
In 1943, when
Castañeda was working for the Fair Employment Practices Commission, the Texas
Historical Commission of the Knights of Columbus employed Rev. Raymond J.
Clancy to write the volume. The papers include some material created by Clancy
before leaving the project in 1946, as well as notes and correspondence created
by Rev. James P. Gibbons, Castañeda's editor during preparation of the
volume. |

IV. Activities and Organizations,
1928-1958 |
|
Correspondence, printed material, reports, minutes, and financial documents reflect the activities in which Castañeda participated and organizations to which he belonged. The bulk of the
series includes rich documentation of Castañeda's associations with three
institutions within the University of Texas at Austin: the Latin American
Collection of the University Library (later the Nettie Lee Benson Collection,
General Libraries), the Department of History, and the Institute of Latin American Studies. |
|
Subsequent subseries contain materials created during his brief
tenure as Superintendent of the San Felipe School District in Del Rio,
correspondence and financial records related to the Mexican Photoprint
Company, and other subseries directed at his international and religious activities. |

V. Collected Materials,
1497-1958 |
|
Newspaper clippings, publications, ephemera, written works, photographs, and historical documents comprise this series of materials collected over the course of Castañeda's professional career. The newspaper clippings are in photocopied form, and include clippings concerning Castañeda's work over the years. Publications include two volumes of The Cactus, the University's yearbook, a typing manual, and other publications from various organizations. Ephemera comprises two boxes of materials that were collected over Castaneda's career, including mass mailings, pamphlets, and invitations. The written works in this series are all by others, sent to Castañeda for critique or for reference, and include works from E.C. Barker and C.W. Hackett, among others. The subseries of historical documents includes many original documents from the 17th-20th centuries, a collection of printers' marks, and two boxes of photostatic copies. |

VI. Audiovisual Materials, 1926-1956 |
|
Photographs, negatives, audio recordings, and film comprise this series. The photographs document multiple events and places, including scenes of Mexico, The University of Texas campus, and pieces of art. One folder of photographs is unclear as to whether or not they truly belong with the Castañeda collection. The folder is marked accordingly. |
|
The audiograph recordings are, by and large, exerpts from Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, but it is unknown if the reader is Dr. Castañeda. There are various films in the series, of 8 and 16mm, as well as a microfilm of a dissertation. |
