Scope and Contents

The Shelley Family Documents consist of four legal documents pertaining to ancestors of Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), the English Romantic poet and social reformer. The documents are indentures concerning the sale, lease, or entailment of land owned by these Shelley family members: Richard Shelley (1583-1623), Timothy Shelley (1700-1770), Sir Bysshe Shelley (1731-1815), and Sir Timothy Shelley (1753-1844).

See also Shelley and Mary (1882) in the Center’s Library, a printed collection of the whole of the unpublished poems, letters, diaries, and other documents in the hands of the Shelley family at the time of its production, edited by Sir Percy F. Shelley and Lady Jane Shelley (call number PR 5431 A4 1882). Locks of Percy Bysshe and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s hair are included in a scrapbook compiled by Leigh Hunt, a fellow English Romantic poet.

The New York Public Library holds a collection of 53 Shelley family legal documents in its Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle.

1 Indenture, signed handwritten document, 1 leaf, dated 1 November 1609. Concerns sale of a farm at Cookland, near Itchingfield, Sussex, from Richard Shelley (1583-1623) to Thomas Streater, a yeoman.

2-4 Indenture, signed handwritten document, 3 leaves, dated 24 March 1753. Concerns lease of Wolborough Manor to Bysshe Shelley (1731-1815) from Timothy Shelley (1700-1770) and John Nightingale, estate trustee. Enclosed is a handwritten estimate of the Wolborough estate, 1 leaf, dated 13 June 1753, addressed to attorney William White.

5-6 Indenture, signed handwritten document, 2 leaves, dated 19 November 1791. Concerns lease of several farms by Bysshe Shelley (1731-1815) and Timothy Shelley (1753-1844) to George Birch of Middlesex, Robert Hurst of Horsham, and Charles Butler of Lincoln's Inn. Farms are Pinkhurst Farm at Slinfold; Rookwoods at Warnham; and Spencers and Rushams Farm at Horsham.
