Historical Note

The Superconducting Super Collider is a partially completed particle accelerator located outside of Dallas, Texas. It was meant to establish the United States as a leader in high-energy particle physics. CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), currently the largest particle collider in the world with a 17-mile circumference, would have been one-third the size of the Superconducting Super Collider when compared to its planned circumference of 54 miles. Construction on the Superconducting Super Collider commenced in the early 1990s, following almost a decade of planning, but the project was halted by Congress in October 1993. Out of the 54 miles of tunnel originally planned, 14 miles were built. What was completed of the Superconducting Super Collider remains, but it is privately owned and not accessible to the public. Reasons for stopping the development of the Superconducting Super Collider include, but are not limited to, mismanagement of the project, the lack of international funding and support, and increasing costs – initial estimates rose from $4 billion to $12 billion, though only $2 billion was spent on the project before its ultimate cessation.
