Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of legal documents relating to African Americans and the institution of slavery in the southern United States, particularly in Concordia, East Carroll, and Iberville parishes, Louisiana, and in Adams and Warren counties, Mississippi, with scattered items from other areas. Many documents registered on one side of the Mississippi River reflect activities on the opposite side. This confusion is most obvious in the papers related to the entry of slaves into Louisiana.
