Bibliographic Note

Alexander Dienst (1870–1938) was a dentist, historian, writer, lecturer, and collector of books and documents on Texas history. Dienst attended schools including Ohio Wesleyan University and Philadelphia Dental College; he began his dental practice in Temple, Texas, in 1889. He also served as Temple's postmaster 1917-1918. Dienst was a member of the Texas State Historical Association's executive council; his collecting area emphasized the history of the Texas Navy.

Scope and Contents

Papers consist of letters, diaries, clippings, scrapbooks, literary productions, legal documents, receipts, and bibliographies organized by form of material and/or by topic, and are arranged chronologically.

These papers were collected and produced by Dienst and include the Bryan-Hall papers. They are concerned with affairs of the Republic of Texas agency in New Orleans; letters, special orders, and other documents relating to the Texas Navy; the George C. Pendleton letters, pertaining to major political developments in Texas and in the United States during the period 1880-1900; correspondence of prominent Texans from the earliest days, represented by Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, David G. Burnet, and others, to the 1920s, including correspondence of Texas governors and dealing with personal, business, governmental, political, and military affairs.
