Biographical / Historical

Bryan, son of Moses Austin and Cora Lewis Bryan, graduated Baylor University, 1877, was admitted to the bar, 1880, practiced law in Brenham, Velasco, and La Grange, was editor of the La Grange Journal, married Martha J. Shepard, 1891 and settled in Houston. Bryan was instrumental in starting the Sons of the Republic of Texas, served as president of the Texas Bar Association in 1902 and the Harris County Bar Association in 1911, helped found the Harris County Law Library Association and the South Texas School of Law of Houston, and had an avid interest in Texas history and his own family history.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, genealogical and printed materials, speeches, photographs, and daguerreotypes relate to Lewis Randolph Bryan, Sr., his family, his life and his death, as well as to the Lewis, Austin, and Bryan families of Texas and Missouri. Included are speeches delivered by Bryan concerning the San Jacinto battlefield, an address delivered at a banquet in honor of Joseph C. Hutcheson, and memorials and resolutions honoring Bryan as well as correspondence and research notes made by his grandson, Paul G. Bell.
