Biographical Note

Dr. Ernst Von Voss (1894-1976) was born in Fredericia, Denmark, on July 6, 1894. He graduated from Danish High School in 1912, then attended Technical University of Aachen, Germany (1913-1914) before graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1918) with a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He went on to earn his Doctor's Degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Paris, France (1923).

After briefly working as an instructor at MIT (1923-1924), Von Voss began his career with Humble Oil and Refining Company in the Development Division. He was offered the position of Chief Engineer of the Refining Department in 1926, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1959.

In addition to his career with Humble, Von Voss was also a member of the United States Strategic Bombing Survey in 1945 under the Petroleum Administration for War. He assisted in surveying the damage and effects of World War II on Germany's oil industry.

Scope and Contents

A collection of correspondence, photographs, and a scrapbook related to the chemical engineering career of Dr. Ernst Von Voss with Humble Oil and Refining Company. The collection includes an application and correspondence from the Texas State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers (1938-1939), Von Voss' original job offer from Humble (1926), and a scrapbook with a portrait, biographical sketch, and photographs from his retirement party (1959).
