Biographical Note

W. H. Flachmeier emigrated from Wiemelshausen, Westphalia, to the United States in 1893 where he attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, as did his sons after him. He married Emilie Pautz of Witten on the Ruhr, and they settled in Texas where he held pastorates in Pflugerville, Rosebud, and Gillespie County. His oldest son, William August, was a Lutheran pastor in Columbus, Texas, from 1923 until 1941, when he entered the army as a chaplain in the Asiatic Theater during World War II. From 1948 to 1961, he was Director of Parish Education of the Texas District of the American Lutheran Church and later Director of the Lutheran Audio-visual Library.

Scope and Contents

The Flachmeier family papers are comprised of correspondence, memorandum books, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, printed material, photographs, programs and announcements, typescripts, newspapers, literary productions, notes, questionnaires, broadsides, map, tape, film, and index cards, arranged chronologically by type of material.

The papers document the history of, and events in, the lives of the extended Flachmeier family, including the Pautz and Hastedt families, both in Germany and the United States. The papers are especially concerned with the schooling and church-related research and publications of William August Flachmeier (1900-1979) and the activities of his father Wilhelm Heinrich Gottlob Flachmeier (1870-1953), both Lutheran pastors in Texas. The papers additionally contain historical research pursued by W. A. Flachmeier's wife Jeanette Hastedt Flachmeier.
