Historical Note

The Galveston Cotton Exchange, the first Texas cotton brokerage and the third cotton exchange in the United States, was created in 1873. Col. W.L. Moody chaired the first organizational meeting; W.H. Sellers became the organization's president. The new exchange adopted standards and rules for cotton dealers; soon thereafter, it acquired Western Union Telegraph services to link Galveston to world cotton markets. In 1888, the group renamed itself Galveston Cotton Exchange and Board of Trade, reflecting its members' growing interest in commodities such as grain, coffee, and produce.

In 1899, prior to the devastating hurricane of 1900, Galveston exported 2 million bales of cotton from its port.

The United States Department of Agriculture designated Galveston as one of the seven original spot cotton markets in 1915; however, the city's share of the cotton market declined with the opening of the Houston ship channel in 1916, and later because of changing market conditions. Galveston's spot cotton market closed in 1967.
