Biographical Note

Radie Britain (1899-1994) was born in Silverton, Texas, and later moved to Clarendon, where she studied at Clarendon College. She graduated from the American Conservatory in Chicago in 1921, and returned to Texas to teach. After saving enough money, Britain moved to Europe, living in Paris, Berlin, and Munich, where she debuted professionally in 1926. She returned to the U.S. to live and study in Chicago. As an organist, she began to produce orchestral works, earning the 1930 Julliard National Publication Prize for "Her Heroic Poem."

Britain married three times. First in 1930 to Leslie Moeller, with whom Britain had her daughter Lerae in 1932. In 1940, Britain married sculptor Edgardo Simone (1889-1949), and then aviator Theodore (Ted) Morton in 1959.
