Biographical Note

Harley Clark (1935-2014) introduced the "Hook 'Em Horns" sign during a 1955 football pep rally; the hand sign became an iconic symbol of the University of Texas.

While at the University of Texas, Clark served as head cheerleader, was elected student body president (1957-1958) and was a member of the Texas Cowboys, the Friar Society, and the Tejas Club. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1962.

In 1977, Governor Dolph Briscoe appointed Clark to serve on the Civil District Court for Travis County. During his appointment, Clark ruled on several landmark cases such as the Edgewood I.S.D. v. Kirby, in which the Texas public school financing system was found unconstitutional, and Hopwood v. Texas, which ruled on affirmative action.

Clark was a supporter of the Texas Exes alumni group and organized the "Hook 'Em Turns 50"" anniversary event in 2005. He also participated in the UT Oral History project.
