A Guide to the Johann Jacob Groos Letter Book
Johann Jacob Groos was born in Offenbach, Germany in 1822. Groos studied civil engineering and worked as a surveyor in Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1845. He settled in New Braunfels, where he worked as a surveyor from 1849 to 1860. Groos then served as county clerk of Comal County from 1862 to 1865, and was mayor of New Braunfels from 1872 to 1873. In 1866 Groos became an agent for the Aetna and Phoenix insurance companies. Groos also served as commissioner of the General Land Office from 1874 until his death in 1878.

The Johann Jacob Groos letter book consists of photostat copies of handwritten letters, which predominately concern his work for the Aetna and Phoenix insurance companies.
