Historical Note

Robert Holmes Baker (1858-1935) moved from Tennessee to Texas in 1882. A merchant and insurance company manager, he became a business partner of Edward M. House, an investor active in Democratic politics. Baker bought and sold Texas railroad lines, including the Texas Central Railroad and the Wichita Falls Railroad, and he served in the Waco Light Infantry and the Texas National Guard.

Baker became involved in penal reform in the 1920s, chairing the Texas Committee on Prisons and Prison Labor (1924-1927) and reorganizing the Texas Prison Board (1927-1929).

Baker's son Burke Baker (1887-1964) was an independent oil producer and insurance executive in Houston. He contributed to the creation of the Burke Baker Planetarium in the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Baker's daughter Nelle Baker (1895-1967) married Captain Rufus Boylan in 1926.
