Edmund L. Pincoffs was born in Chicago in 1919 and earned his A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1941 before serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He returned to academia and earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1957. Pincoffs was a member of the University of Houston Department of Philosophy faculty (1955-1965) before joining the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as chair of the Department of Philosophy (1976-1980) and Associate Dean of the UT Graduate School (1967-1968). He retired in 1989 and died in Austin on November 7, 1991. Dr. Pincoffs worked in ethical theory, philosophy of law, virtue ethics, and related fields.
