Biographical/Historical Note

Born in Loyal Valley, Texas, in 1880, John Marvin Hunter began working in his father's newspaper business at an early age. After jobs at the Menardville Record, the Mason Herald, and the Llano Times, Hunter established his own paper, the Comfort Times. By 1899 the young Hunter was working in Mexico for the Two Republics before government opposition forced him to leave Mexico, thus beginning a long career at various newspapers in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. He finally settled in Bandera, Texas, where he published the Bandera New Era and the Bandera Bulletin.

In addition to the newspapers, Hunter also published historical magazines such as Hunter's Magazine, Hunter's Frontier Magazine, and Frontier Times. He also authored several books and pamphlets, as well as founding the Frontier Times Museum. A keen interest in history led Hunter to collect documents, articles, and other materials that related to American history, particularly Texas and the Southwest.
