Biographical Note

Fred J. Maroon was born in New Brunswick, N.J. in September 1924. After three years in the Navy during World War II, he attended the Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C., receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1950. He completed his studies with one year of graduate work at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After graduation, Mr. Maroon worked for Life magazine in New York and became a stringer in their Paris bureau while completing graduate studies. After a brief stint practicing architecture, Maroon was inspired to become a freelance photographer in 1953, when Edward Steichen selected a number of his photographs to include in the exhibition "Always the Young Strangers," at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

During a career in photojournalism that lasted nearly half a century, Maroon covered numerous subjects, including Congress and politics; architecture, especially Washington landmarks such as the White House, the U.S. Capitol building and the Supreme Court; the cuisine of chef Jean-Louis Palladin; the Middle East, including Egypt, Afghanistan and President Anwar Sadat; and fashion. Maroon also photographed several presidencies, including those of Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. Notably, Maroon delayed public release of his 500 rolls of film of Nixon and the Watergate investigation for over a quarter of a century, wanting to wait until passions about the president had cooled and "people could look at the photographs objectively and with historical perspective."

During his career, Maroon had scores of photographic features in most major national and international magazines, including National Geographic, Smithsonian, Nation's Business, Paris Match, Town and Country, Travel and Leisure, Esquire, Life, Look, and Holiday. Among Maroon's many honors were four First Prize awards in the annual White House News Photographers' Association competitions. He was also the recipient of Gold Medal awards from the Art Directors' Clubs of Metropolitan Washington and New York as well as a Gold Medal at the 1982 International Book Art Exhibition in Leipzig for his book The Egypt Story (with P. H. Newby). His work has been exhibited throughout America and abroad, including shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Corcoran Gallery, the United States Capitol, the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress. A major exhibition of photographs from the Nixon-Watergate era was shown at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History from July to December 1999.

Maroon authored numerous books during his career, including Washington: Magnificent Capital (with Eric Sevareid and A. Robert Smith); Courage and Hesitation (with Allen Drury); These United States (with Hugh Sidey); Keepers of the Sea (with Edward L. Beach), a book on the United States Navy; Maroon on Georgetown; The English Country House: a Tapestry of Ages; Jean-Louis: Cooking with the Seasons; The United States Capitol (with Suzy Maroon); and The Supreme Court of the United States. Maroon's last book, The Nixon Years 1969–1974: White House to Watergate, (with Tom Wicker) was published by Abbeville Press in August 1999, the twenty-fifth anniversary of President Nixon's resignation.

Maroon died at his home in Washington, D.C. in November 2001.

Scope and Contents

The Fred J. Maroon Photographic Archive, circa 1950-2000, is approximately 80 linear feet in size and documents Maroon's five-decade career in photojournalism. Subjects covered in the archive include U.S. presidents, notably Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard M. Nixon, as well as prominent politicians such as Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, Jacob K. Javitz, Tip O'Neill and Stewart Udall. Also included are international figures such as Winston Churchill. Maroon traveled extensively within the United States and abroad for assignments; his archive contains features on numerous U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington D.C.'s national monuments and architecture; coverage of U.S. states including Alabama, Arizona, Montana, Utah and Virginia; as well as international features documenting Canada, Colombia, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, Switzerland and Turkey. A variety of other subject matter in the archive covers the U.S. Congress, English country houses, automobile racing and the French cooking school Cordon Bleu. Maroon's photographs of Nixon during the Watergate investigation are not presently included in the materials at the Briscoe Center.

Much of Maroon's work in the archive was produced for publications such as Nation's Business, Town and Country, Travel and Leisure, Esquire, Life, and Holiday or for the many books Maroon produced. The material consists primarily of photographic negatives, photographic prints, contact sheets and color transparencies (35mm slides).
