N. Givens lived with his wife Kate and children in Waxahachie, Texas, during reconstruction following the Civil War. He served as pastor of the local church, probably Presbyterian, and had previously taught school.
Written by Givens to William Tong Holman on May 4th, the N. Givens Letter, 1869, describes political conditions during reconstruction in Waxahachie, Texas. Givens discusses the lack of police officers and judges, the general characteristics of his neighbors, as well as work as pastor of the local church.
