Biographical Note

A native of New York, Charles Smith Hovey (b. ca. 1820) fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and worked in the cattle trade in Goliad and Refugio counties, Texas. His siblings, Ann and Frank lived in New York.

Scope and Contents

Comprised of Photostats of correspondence, printed materials, and business and financial documents, the Charles Smith Hovey Papers, 1854-1895, chronicle Hovey's service as a soldier in the Civil War and his career as a cattle trader in Goliad and Refugio counties, Texas. Correspondence with his brother Frank and sister Ann concerns familial affairs, the cattle business, business conditions in New York before the Civil War, and post-Civil War national politics. Printed materials include circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture and advertisements for land lottery drawings in Kansas and Wyoming. Business and financial records consist of pension papers, receipts, and memorandum books documenting business transactions.
